Anthropic just announced, Claude will add an invisible watermark all AI-generated text and images. What does that mean for small businesses relying on cheap AI content?

It means just like how it sounds, it's time to move on from that strategy. It's quite unfortunate that it seems to for now apply to short form content such as product descriptions or page summaries. That means you could receive a penalty from Google and in some cases it could mean a huge drop off in your sites SERP rankings.

TLDR; What to do now?

Here's the real killer app, YOU, that's right I said "you." Those who have refrained from stuffing their websites, blogs or social accounts with AI generated slop content have been KILLING IT the past 7 or 8 months. Since Google's November 2025 update which really started hitting thinly written content and AI generated content, pages spamming out AI written posts and pages have fallen off a literal cliff. While those prescient few who stuck to their guns and kept pumping out original self created content, their pages have soared in most cases. So yes, you're going to write less and make it count. Real talk, real stories, real advice written by yourself, a team member or a trusted copy writer.

If you insist on using an LLM to create content then it's time to move on from Claude, you could try one like DeepSeek or possibly ChatGPT, although you'll want to monitor their official social channels and public blogs for info on any changes they may implement.

How's Claude's Watermark work?

Claude will now start leaving two watermarks; the first is a watermark woven into the text itself. You won't see it or know it's there unless you're a cyborg and plugged into the matrix, but Google is going to see it. Not just EU Google, the whole world Google. The 2nd watermark is a signed provenance in the metadata of files Claude creates for you. Think about it like this, when you snap a pic with your iPhone it has metadata and you can actually view where the photo was taken, device, time/date etc. This will be very similar, except good luck trying to edit it.

How can you dodge it?

Good luck with that one, the Watermark supposedly literally travels with the text itself. Woven deep inside the wording or phrasing, so no the idea of copy and paste to notepad and then to Word and then back again is most likely not going to work.

Why is this happening?

The EU has recently started cracking down hardcore against AI generated content that is presented as human written content and the penalties are already being handed out. I mean financial penalties too, big ones. Under the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689), they now require apps and deployers to ensure individuals know when they are interacting with AI or viewing synthetic media designed to look authentic. Violators of this new regulation, if perpetrated in the EU (meaning you operate there provably) can be as much as 15 million euros! But don't worry if you're a small mom and pop shop in the US, these penalties probably won't affect you. The watermark still will. You'll want to opt into human written blog content and copy.
